It’s been a while. It’s not you, it’s me. Life gets in the way, sometimes. And when your blog is about life, well it is a little confusing. I am confused, are you?
Speaking of being confused, the act of giving a gift has always baffled me. I drive my wife crazy with wedding gifts. Truth is I don’t like the idea of being told what to give someone. In some ways, it takes away the thoughtfulness behind it. When I was in law school living on borrowed money, I bought one of my best friends a case of $2 wine for his wedding. I was late in the game, so it was either that or two cloth napkins. I was broke, but wanted to leave an impression. So I went to Trader Joe’s and bought a case of wine. Of course I have been ruthlessly teased ever since. The wedding happened to be at a really nice winery in Napa, and my case of two-buck-chuck showed up very underdressed.
They had a registry, and I probably should have slipped under the radar and went with something on the list. My wife and I also had a registry, so I can’t really wine. In the end, I think the gift giver has the ultimate say. What would the gift receiver appreciate more? It very well may be something off the list – or it could be that something that they didn’t even know they wanted: a few terrible hangovers and an ace in the hole when it comes to teasing a good friend.

Giving someone that gift they didn’t know they wanted is magic if you get it right. You have to know them really well though to succeed. But when you do it is almost better to have given it than received! Almost.
