My typical writing desk (eternaldomnation).

My typical writing desk (eternaldomnation).

I’ve always wanted to be a writer.  I just didn’t know it.

My profession had trained me to write persuasively, but my musings were always based on and limited by the facts – provable nuggets on which every word could be traced.  But when that same profession threw me a curve ball, I had a day of reckoning.  It was late in 2010.  It was an epiphany of grand importance with even grander simplicity.

I could make it up, all of it.  My words weren’t bound to convention.  I had stories to tell.

The realization changed my life.  So much that I actually grew three inches taller to reach 6 foot 3.

Since that day, I have dreamt in words – literally, I have had dreams where words flow across the backs of my eyes – and searched with my senses to turn every encounter into a story.  It’s actually kind of exhausting, but let me tell you – I’m hooked.

I started eternalDomnation in December 2010 with an aim at using it to document my writing process, and more importantly to capture ideas, characters, or to even respond to prompts.  I started my first novel, Rolling for Coal, that same winter, and have been writing and blogging ever since.

Rolling for Coal is on the verge of becoming something special, at least to me, but it’s not there yet.  After the beta read process, I decided to invest in another round of rewrites and revisions before I make the ultimate decision on whether publish or shelve.  Meanwhile, I’ve started my second novel, Beta Fish, and hope to wrap up the first draft by the end of 2013.

I work more than full-time but create opportunities to write when I can.  I am married to my best friend and biggest supporter, Sheila.  Our son, Luca, is – objectively speaking, and based on undeniable fact – the most athletic, bright, and good looking toddler in the universe.  We all live in San Francisco but support Los Angeles sporting teams.

  1. Hello! You’re welcome, and please, forgive my laziness. I’m searching for your new work this rainy morning. Now, I can put off moving another day.

  2. Thank you of being interested in my Blog. I am impressed by yours and yes, I am glad we can share.

  3. Just touching base. Missing your words/posts. Trust all is well in your life!

    • Eric, thank you for checking in. Smiling from ear to ear knowing that I have been missed ;). Life is giving me great material, just not enough time to write. But you have inspired me. Hence a post today…thank you, my friend. We have some catching up to do!!!

  4. HI E.D thank you so much for following. I’ve read a couple of your posts and absolutely love the way you write. Look forward to seeing your future posts. 🙂

    – Naomi

  5. May of accedently put the previous post on the wrong section but hey, here it is again
Thank you so much for liking my post. I’m still new to the Blogging & writing world, but it a fantastic way to get thinks out of my head, and when people like you like my posts it really helps me feel I’m going in the right direction.

    Thank you

  6. We share similar paths…and I am also married to my best friend and our oldest son, Lucas, who we fondly called Luca when he was a toddler and baby……

  7. Thank you so much for dropping by poetrycottage … from one writer to another it’s nice to meet you.

  8. Absent a Dominic post/fix, I resorted to perusing your blog archives. There I found and read the tributes to your mom and sister. And I cried, for your loss and the simple beauty with which your share memories and feelings. I tried to fathom the depth of such losses and had to extract myself. It pained my heart to imagine how I will someday deal with the passing of my mother or three younger sisters. Your writing style is obviously from your core yet expressed in clear, understandable story. Having absorbed and reflected on these four posts, I know why I appreciate you and your skill.

Just thought you might want to know.

    • Wow, maybe I should not post more often 🙂

Thank you, Eric, for your kind words. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate them.

I wrote those posts in the guise that, as someone who wanted to learn how to write, I needed to find a way to capture “loss.” And why not draw from personal experience? I say guise, because in reality writing about it was just something that I had to do. Not sure if that makes sense. I never would have thought of myself as someone that would put such intimate feelings “out there,” but I’ve found that writing, and blogging, has simply become an extension of my voice, and certain things – I’m guessing here – just need to be processed by way of the written word.

By the way – nothing makes me happier than to see that someone has dug into an older post. It makes me very proud of this little blog. One of the draw backs of the here-and-now mentality with blogging is that posts become stale very quickly. It’s a real shame, because there are often nuggets worth reading in our pasts – this is why, at times, I try to treat other blogs as novels or stories, ignoring the dates, to get a sense for the journeys we are all on.

I do really appreciate your continued support – and you have motivated me to ditch work at lunch today to peck the keys. Another post forthcoming! Thanks, again, Eric!

      • Thank you so much for liking my post. I’m still new to the Blogging & writing world, but it a fantastic way to get thinks out of my head, and when people like you like my posts it really helps me feel I’m going in the right direction.

        Thank you

  11. Thank you for visiting by blog and the like on my poem. Looking forward to exploring your work.

    • Dude, you have some killer stuff going on over there on your blog. I really enjoyed your poem – and look forward to following/reading more of your stuff! I’ve always had a push/pull with music and writing, especially when I give poetry a go. Anyhow – appreciate any feedback comments in the future and look forward to sharing our work!

  12. Your writing is very compelling to read! Thanks for visiting my blog, and good luck with all your future ideas 🙂

  13. Thanks for liking my post. Your style of writing is good.

  14. You rock. That’s why I’ve given you the Versatile Blogger Award. Carry on! http://readtomlucas.com/2013/08/31/i-am-a-very-interesting-man/

  15. Very nice to meet you…relatively speaking 🙂 Your blog looks very interesting and I cant wait to have a proper look around !

  16. I like the cut of your gib. Thanks for stopping it at my blog. I’d be interested in seeing your more polished work, that’s for sure. Any concrete plans on bringing those bestsellers to the light of day?

    • The cut of your gib…I’m going to steal that! That’s awesome, thank you. Look forward to reading more from you! As far as the bestsellers – one word, sentence, paragraph at a time – I’m always working on it!

  17. Just your truth, buddy. That’s what we want from you. It’s always so much more interesting than the stuff we try and make up, ya know?

    • I stink. I tried to respond to your comments on the app, and it just didn’t hAPPen. See what I did there? Anyhow, thank you for your kind comments and encouragement – looking forward to reading some more of your posts too!

  18. Thanks for visiting my post. Wish you all the best for eternal Luck.

  19. “(I have a few dozen unwritten bestsellers)” – hysterical!

  20. Man, get those bestsellers published!

  21. Unpublished bestsellers? You have some really cool stuff here and quite a following. I am glad that you appreciated my post. I look forward to reading more from you.

    • Thank you! For me, writing is a way to voice my feelings and life experiences. Unfortunately, loss is not unique to any of us. Fortunately, there are many people who are willing to write about it, and through their words (and now my own), I have found a way to appreciate life’s journey with a different perspective (that doesn’t mean it is always easy!). Thanks for you comment, look forward to reading some more from you, too!

  22. Many blogs are just read, maybe “like”, rinse and repeat. I find yours different. I click with your style of writing and know that if your story on paper is as compelling as some of the content you put on your blog, you will go far. Just don’t give up. We all have dreams of varying degrees. Success is all perception. Thank you for “liking” my post tonight…I love being able to connect with new readers! Best of luck to you! 😀

  23. Hi! Thanks for stopping by my blog, and for the “like” on my recent post. I am happy you enjoyed it, and I appreciate your visit to my site.

Your blog is fantastic! I enjoy your writing very much. 🙂

    • Thank you – I really enjoy reading other people’s words on life, sometimes just random events, others events that we tend to all share. Anyhow, thanks for the comment, look forward to reading more of your posts!

  24. You were the first person to ever like my blog, so thanks for that!
Definitely looking forward to reading what you’ve got posted here… the stuff I’ve read so far looks promising! =)

  25. Quite intrigued by how you wrote your “about me.” Especially something about the last part. Hmm. ^_^

  26. Hey man, I’m a serious fan. That’s why I just nominated you for the Reality Blog Award. Cheers! http://readtomlucas.com/2012/10/18/file-this-under-too-cool/

  27. Hey, has anyone ever told you, you have a knack for writing? JK, your blog is awesome, and your writing is even better. Thanks so much for stopping past my blog and liking my latest poem. Keep riding this thing til the wheels fall off, or you get published…whatever comes first 🙂

  28. Hi, I nominated you for the Very Inspiring Blogger Award if that’s ok with you 🙂 Check out my post (http://jellypom.wordpress.com/2012/10/13/very-inspiring-blogger-award/) on it for more info.

  29. Hi! Thanks for the like! I’m on WordPress for the same reason-I just want to make writing a bigger part of my life. 🙂

  30. Definitely looking forward to reading through some of your stuff! Thanks for liking my post and leading me here 🙂 x

  31. Hey, glad you found my blog so I could take a look at yours. I’ve been a professional business writer for years, but just now rewriting and rewriting and rewriting the draft of my first novel. It’s tough! But you know that. Sometimes it’s great, sometimes it’s crap. Keep following your passion, and I’ll follow your blog, so I know when you get published. One of my Twitter pals posted a tweet you might appreciate: “I write because I can’t invite the whole world to have a beer wih me.” Cheers!

    • Well if you follow your passion, I’ll follow your blog too! I like that, thank you! Your grammar post was fantastic, particularly the part that [not which] described the use of that versus which! I like the tweet, what a fantastic way to put it. I feel like sometimes I try to have a beer with the world…makes writing pretty difficult the next morning!

  32. A writer I’m not. A reader, watcher, listener, and a sponge for thoughts. Thanks, you help filling my needs

    • I think anyone with something to say is a writer, some of us just proclaim it to justify what it is we are trying to say. So glad you enjoy my posts, you inspire me to continue writing and to make this passion a bigger part of my life. Love you, Dad.

  33. Thanks for calling by. I see you call yourself Aspiring. Would one of those bestsellers in print change that? Would an e-book count?

    • Now this is an interesting question, isn’t it? When do you go from aspiring to aspired. I’m not sure the answer. For starters, I really need to finish my first novel, which has been almost two years in the making (that darn job keeps getting in the way)! I like to think that I will have made it when one of my books gives as much joy to its readers as I have gained from one of my favorites!

  34. Thanks for stopping by Writer in the Garret. I’ve only read a couple of your posts, and I like the tone and the attention to details. I’m always trying to get hold of the switches, too. I’ll look forward to reading more.

  35. I love the idea of unpublished bestsellers! I think I’ll dig a few of mine out of the filing cabinet and just look at them! Thanks for visiting my blog! http://www.backstorywriting.wordpress.com

  36. Hi, glad you stumbled upon my blog, so I could find yours! It’s always nice to find other writers who are just writing for the sake of writing, not necessarily knowing where it’s going to lead us. In any case, keep writing, you’re great at it! 🙂

  37. Thanks for liking my post – it lead me here and what a great blog you have. It’s nice to know that there are other aspiring writers out there who share their experiences on blogs. I hope you do complete one of your best sellers.

  38. Hey, glad to know that there are other people who put their writing online just for the love of it. What’s more, yours is a delight to read! Here’s hoping for those bestsellers.

  39. I get it. I am a writer too. And I am also hungry. Keep on writing. 🙂

  40. Hey, so I just nominated you for the Kreativ Blogger and the Versatile Blogger awards. Go to this post for more details http://wantoncreation.wordpress.com/2012/02/14/the-kreativ-blogger-and-versatile-blogger-awards/ 🙂

  41. Awesome blog you have here! I hope you get those unwritten bestsellers written and out there one day! Have noticed your book choices are quite different to mine as you pointed out on my blog – I will have to check some of them out (though I have read a couple – I loved Slaughterhouse Five, and enjoy a lot of Vonnegut’s work – total loony, but a genius as well).
Good luck with everything, keep writing 🙂
